The CYLCOMED project continues to make significant strides in advancing the cybersecurity of connected medical devices (CMDs). A key development is the first Cybersecurity Toolbox prototype, reflecting extensive research and innovation across multiple layers of cybersecurity.

This blog post delves into the architecture and functionalities of the toolbox, its early adoption potential, and the future enhancements planned. Additionally, we explore the groundbreaking Neuromuscular Transmission (NMT) intelligent infusion controller, a pivotal component of CYLCOMED Pilot 1.

CYLCOMED Cybersecurity Toolbox: Architecture and Innovations

The CYLCOMED Cybersecurity Toolbox prototype  features a robust architecture divided into three primary layers:

1. Data Collection and Analysis:

  •    Functionality: Real-time data gathering and analysis to monitor and detect threats.
  •    Innovation: Utilizes advanced algorithms and machine learning for pattern recognition and anomaly detection.

2. Device Integrity, Security, and Service Management:

  •    Functionality: Manages software updates, vulnerability assessments, and ensures service continuity.
  •    Innovation: Integrates state-of-the-art security protocols and automated management tools.

3. Identity and Access Management and Data Protection:

  •    Functionality: Manages user identities, access controls, and safeguards data through encryption.
  •    Innovation: Employs advanced identity verification methods and robust access control policies.

Early Adoption and Future Enhancements

Even in its early stages, the CYLCOMED Cybersecurity Toolbox has shown significant potential, offering functionalities that benefit the project’s use cases and demonstrating innovative features that set it apart. Future plans include:

  • New Features: Introduction of the CYLCOMED Security Dashboard, offering centralized security metrics and alerts.
  • Technical Improvements: Continuous code enhancements to optimize performance and reliability.
  • Integration Scenarios: Seamless integration of all four layers for a comprehensive cybersecurity solution.

The improved version of the toolbox aims to be detailed by March 2025, with the final version described by August 2025.

Neuromuscular Transmission (NMT) Intelligent Infusion Controller

Also an exciting development within CYLCOMED Pilot 1 is the NMT intelligent infusion controller. This medical device represents a technological breakthrough in the robotization and automation of tasks within Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Here’s a closer look at its components and functionalities:

NMT Intelligent Infusion Controller: Overview

The NMT intelligent infusion controller monitors and regulates the Neuromuscular Transmission Vital Signs Parameter to administer relaxant drugs at regular intervals. The goal is to achieve and maintain a specific target value for this physiological parameter, enhancing patient care in the ICU.

Innovative Technological Advancements

RGB, the use case provider, is developing a family of controllers with innovative functionalities for integration into a multiparameter monitor. The CYLCOMED project aims to create a Hardware in Loop/Software in Loop (HiL/SiL) testbench platform (Digital Twin) to verify the system under laboratory conditions.

Challenges and Solutions

Developing this controller involves overcoming various challenges, including:

  • Compliance with Functional Requirements: Ensuring the system meets all necessary functional standards.
  • Physiological Behavior Testing: Simulating different patient conditions to test the controller’s performance.
  • Security Compliance: Addressing non-functional requirements, such as CPU limitations that could impact performance.

The platform evaluates:

1. Controller Performance: Robustness in the presence of noise and varying patient sensitivity to the drug.

2. Risk Mitigation: Safety and security measures to address potential risks associated with the application.

Conclusion

The CYLCOMED project is at the forefront of enhancing cybersecurity for connected medical devices, with significant progress in developing its Cybersecurity Toolbox prototype. Simultaneously, the NMT intelligent infusion controller marks a significant technological advancement in ICU automation. Together, these innovations promise to elevate patient care and cybersecurity standards in healthcare. Stay tuned for further updates as CYLCOMED continues to push the boundaries of medical device cybersecurity and automation.
